Personalized Learning with Habits of Mind: Consulting Services

Personalized Learning and Habits of Mind are not new ideas, yet many schools around the world struggle with how to do "it."

HABITS OF MIND are a set of thinking dispositions at the core of social, emotional, and cognitive behaviors.

PERSONALIZED LEARNING is a progressively learner-driven model where learners deeply engage in meaningful, authentic, and rigorous challenges to demonstrate desired outcomes.

Together, Personalized Learning and Habits of Mind provide a framework for
growing and sustaining a relevant, rigorous, and reflective learning culture.

Lisa Carter, Assistant Superintendent
Region One Schools, CT

As an educator who thrives on proliferating engagement, excitement, and equitable learning on a consistent basis, I owe it all to two concepts within my teaching: Habits of Mind & Personalized Learning. I have learned that when students develop and display productive behaviors while blending together responsibility for their own learning and discovery of knowledge, powerful outcomes begin to emerge. First and foremost, the building of relationships with their peers. At the beginning of this school year, I designed an English curriculum around voice, co-creation, and self-discovery within reading and writing. It is fantastic to work "with" my students and observe them thinking interdependently while designing meaningful and relevant themes and concepts that interest them. What I find most valuable is each student's discovery and revelation of who they are as learners - it's amazing!

The North Salem Central School District has been fortunate to receive the expertise of Allison Zmuda for three years and in this last year we have happily welcomed the support of Bena Kallick. Allison and Bena have been instrumental in guiding us to align our K-12 instructional practices, in the teaching of critical thinking, as well as helping us to purposefully embed the Habits of Mind. Allison and Bena have provided us with a cost-effective and high quality professional development model that combines on-site sessions with virtual meetings. This learning model is building the capacity of our faculty and administration so that we are able to achieve the goals of the North Salem Profile of a Graduate and consequently our District's Mission.

Adult learning theory tells us that topics should be of interest, timely, and built upon past experiences. Experts also recommend flexibility in space and time, yet as a learning profession, we hold onto dates on a calendar to “turn on, or off adult learning”. Allison and Bena offer distance learning that is flexible and personalized to group and district needs. We have benefited from more continuous contact, and personalized sessions. Our Professional Development budget is now expended over a series of appointments tailored to our needs. As a result, our faculty feels personally supported and connected to global expertise, bringing their learning into their next level of work.
